Error: SQL Server replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through a server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name

Often in new environments DBA’s come up with setting up replication. If the server on which the replication is being set up had a different name earlier that the new DBA is not aware of then at the time of configuring the distribution database the following error might occur:

SQL Server replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through a server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name

To fix this first query your server with

select @@SERVERNAME
go

If it returns a different name other than the real name then run the following commands:

sp_dropserver 'oldservername'
go
sp_addserver 'realservername', LOCAL
go

And restart the sql server service. Now

select @@servername

should return the new server name

Hope this helps!
